The grätzlhotel Heurigen guide

Vienna is probably the only city with more than two million inhabitants where wine is cultivated, and wine growing has its own institution here: The “Heuriger”, the ex-farm sales of the Austrian "Weinhauer" (the Austrian expression for winemakers), should not be missed on any visit to Vienna. Here are the grätzlhotel favorites.

Heuriger Muth - traditional Heuriger with 150 years of history

A Viennese legend is back: Heuriger Muth. The cultivation of wine began here as early as 1596, and a little later it was served in its own bar. There has always been an unwritten law here: before you entered, you had to give up your position. From that time, you were neither lord nor servant, neither superior nor inferior - just a simple soul in search of a little happiness. One of them was the former chancellor and foreign minister Leopold Figl, a regular guest at Probusgasse number 10, where Figl even prepared for the negotiation of the Austrian State Treaty: With the exquisite wines of Hans ‘Schani’ Muth.

Although there is no fixed menu, the Fleischlaberl are world-famous and nowhere else can you savour Viennese Heurigen culture as well as with that view.

Heuriger Zahel Winery - the purist

For the Zahels, making wine means creating something in harmony with nature and with respect for craftsmanship and tradition, bringing unspoiled nature into the glass and watching the butterflies fly in the vineyard. Where it says Zahel on the label, there is organic wine inside, produced biodynamically according to Demeter guidelines.

The Gemischter Satz, for example, is a very special white wine. It contains at least three different grape varieties, but they all come from the same vineyard and are harvested, pressed and fermented at the same time.
