Vienna is celebrating the Johann Strauss bicentenary from January 1 to December 31, with a first night every week from 10 different genres, indoor and outdoor. There are event locations in all 23 districts of the city, some of them unexpected, like the Main Cemetery, the Danube Island Festival or up in the sky. Vienna’s great orchestras and many contemporary artists will be taking part.
Johann Strauss Sohn, composer, musician and one of the first pop stars in world history, will be honoured with an annual event programme in Vienna to mark his 200th birthday in 2025. He was not only the most famous creator of the Viennese waltz, but also a true ambassador for Vienna in the world of music. His lively melodies, such as the ‘Danube Waltz’ and the ‘Kaiser Waltz’, are firmly anchored in the culture and identity of the city on the Danube. The Johann Strauss Apartment at the Wien Museum is the only original residence of the artist that is open to the public. The composer lived here at Praterstraße 54 from 1863 to 1874.
